For a very concise and informative look at much of the salient information on bookmobiles, I highly recommend the “Bookmobiles at a Glance” paper prepared by OLOS for National Bookmobile Day 2015. Includes a chart breakdown of the number of bookmobiles per state from the years 2006-2011, which is an interesting look at the wide variation in bookmobile popularity across the different states.

The Wonderful World of Libraries & Social Media

In a few moments I’ll be talking about social media and the library, but before then, I had a random thought the other day; has the ability to take pictures so easily with smartphones made photography as an art form less valuable? What is beautiful about pictures is the ability to convey so many different feelings to the observer, and it doesn’t have to be a Picasso painting or a picture from National Geographic. I found my staring at a painting of a man on a boat at a diner in Blue Mountain, Ontario. I couldn’t help but imagine a lie for the tiny man, where he was taking the boat to, hell, I found myself wondering if this man was real, out there somewhere in the world. That’s the true beauty of a picture or painting.

I’m lucky enough to know a great photographer who has been featured in magazines across the globe, and I brought her in to run a workshop last week. She spoke to teens about finding their inspiration and how to carve a path in the art industry. When I asked her that same question I mentioned above, she answered without hesitation, “yes.” While the advancement in cellphones has been phenomenal, it isn’t without it’s advantages and disadvantages.

Just like the scenario I just mentioned, social media has its pro’s and con’s. People love social media for its immediacy, and the ability to share and access information at will (Xie & Stevenson, 2014). Looking for the latest info on a hostage situation or plane crash, Twitter is the place to go. That’s the positive. The cyber-bullying that takes place across the world, that’s the negative. I’d be naïve to say that social media hasn’t changed the way we experience the world.

What does this have to do with libraries and social media as an outreach platform? It’s easy to attach ourselves to the newest trend. For an industry that is tirelessly trying to appeal to the younger generation, it might seem like the easiest solution, and that’s not entirely misguided. After all, 75% of teens use social networking sites on a daily basis (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). However, before we can do anything, we need to understand how to properly use social media to ensure our efforts are met with success.

Libraries are amazing spaces. They’re judgment free gathering places for all members of a community to imagine, create, learn, and grow. Gone are the days when a library was simply used for research, or cracking out a roll of microfiche. Today, they’re more known for being on the cutting edge of technology with the libraries offering services including 3D printers, makerspaces, and other forms of technology.

Here’s the thing, not everybody can make it out to a library. Our area has a number of retirement residences, and I’m sure there are a good number of residents who would love to make it to the library, they just don’t have the means. It’s naïve to think that just because they’re in a retirement they don’t access social media, but you’d be amazed at how many of them are active on Facebook and Twitter! These are the types of excellent opportunities to use social media as outreach to an underserved group of the community (Collier, 2012). You can inform them about programs they, or their friends and family, might be interested in, or let them know about the extensive collection of eBooks the library offers. You wouldn’t believe how happy some of the seniors were when they found out they could use the tablet their grandchildren got them for Christmas to read books at the library. Oh, and when you tell them they don’t have to worry about late fees, well, let’s just say we had quite a few happy campers after that visit. To be, that’s a clear benefit to social media.

In order for libraries to be successful in using social media as a form of outreach we should be sharing fun entertainment based information, but always finding a way to connect the Tweet back to the library (King, 2015). Here’s an example to better explain my point: last week I organized the first Tech Talk Week at my library. One of the activities was a LEGO robotics demo that would be facilitated by a local high school. Leading up to the event I kept Tweeting different articles and images about LEGO, but at the same time, I always provided the link to the LEGO programs we were offering at the library. Social media channels, especially Twitter, are great ways to inform your community about the upcoming events at your library, but only if you’re able to blend the fun attention grabbing information with your libraries services.

Here’s where you can run into problems with your social media account. One fault I’ve found with library social media accounts is the lack of responsiveness from whoever is monitoring the account. If you’re hoping to use social media for outreach, you must be timely with your responses to peoples inquires. Think about how frustrating it would be to tweet out a question to your library and never get a response, but see them update their account with new material daily. As a customer, you’d be ticked off, and you’re less likely to speak positively about the library. In order to avoid this, a library system must take several steps including creating a strategy and goals for all social media channels, establishing a team to run the social media accounts, a mandate to connect and communicate with customers using social media, and to track usage and engagement levels using analytics and insights (King, 2015).

If you’ve made it this far, I appreciate it, but what I’d like you to take away from this post is while social media is as relevant as ever, in order to be successful in applying it to your organization, there needs to be a clear plan developed on how to maximize the strengths of social media. There’s many groups in your community who would love to use the library, but can’t for a variety of reason. It’s your job to use social media as an effective tool to involve those individuals in all the amazing services your library has to offer.

Community Engagement and Outreach with Special Needs Populations

The goal of many libraries is to become a community resource.  In order to achieve this goal, libraries must go out into their communities.  They need to reach the people in the community they serve.  One way to do this is through outreach programs.  One population of the community that benefits from these types of programs are adults with mental and physical disabilities.  At the Avon Public Library in Colorado, the children’s librarian noticed several developmentally disabled adults watching story time.   They seemed fascinated with the music and stories.  A story time for these adults was proposed and the project began.  The library then went on to partner with the agency in the community, Mountain Valley Developmental Services, to develop a program that would best suit the needs of the adults they would be serving. (Levin, 2008)

The Niles District Library in Michigan has also implemented programs for adults with developmental disabilities.  The title of the program is Special Edition club. They began with weekly programs such as crafts, movies and book sharing. They have adapted their programs to include story times, healthy eating and Zumba classes.  According to program creator Laura Hollister, the goal is to “Make everything a learning opportunity on multiple levels” (Hollister, 2015) and to offer “high quality, high interest events to draw non-affected families too.” (Hollister, 2015)

Why do we need to reach these populations? We need to reach these members of our communities. Libraries are becoming places other than just for books. They are becoming information centers and community hubs.  It is important to continue this trend and include every member of the community possible. Special needs adults and children will benefit from coming to the library.  Another reason for including these populations in community outreach is because they will be at the library anyway.  We should take the opportunity to make their visits meaningful.  So yes, it is the library’s responsibility to reach the members of their community and to include all as much as possible.  This is accomplished by having meaningful and interesting programs.

Community Outreach in Urban Populations: How & When?

When I began looking into the topic of community outreach for libraries, I thought that there must be some type of guidelines out there for librarians to go by. What I found was that community outreach involves a lot of components and that this may be a much larger topic than I think my team and I had bargained for. I’ve come to see that outreach involves one-on-one interactions, venturing outside of the library’s walls, being sensitive to life situations that you may not have direct experience with, and a willingness to learn and learn…and learn. The state of Oregon has some guidelines in place in terms of reaching out to immigrant and language-minority populations and those guidelines can be applied to any area of outreach (Oregon State Library). These guidelines include: getting out and asking the people of the community about the services that they require, building community support, creating a library image that appeals to the target audience, building institutional support, and purchasing materials that the target audience can directly relate to (Oregon State Library).

Community outreach can begin at any time. Beginning to build a relationship with the surrounding community from the very start by participating in activities outside of the library can let potential patrons know that the library is a place where they can feel safe and accepted, trust and respect are the cornerstones of a successful community outreach program (Oregon State Library). On the note of creating a safe and accepting atmosphere, a large part of outreach should include educating staff – one of the biggest barriers facing urban communities (especially the homeless) are the attitudes of library staff – and implementing sensitivity training as well as specialized reference services that cater to the homeless (Mars, 2013). Outreach librarians often will find the need to get creative in finding places to interact with members of the community: “by entering community spaces outside the confines of the library, librarians can connect with members of the public who do not feel comfortable entering libraries” (Williment, 2013).

I would propose that libraries that serve urban communities head out into the area and get in touch with community centers like food banks, after-school programs, shelters, even Department of Health Services offices to find out how they can partner in order to bring library resources directly to this group of people. In my work with a non-profit organization, I have found that organizations such as United Way are enthusiastic about offering assistance with outreach. Often, if a program starts with offering services to the youth of a community, adults will follow suite. Library outreach programs that target children will inevitably be able to pull in the caretakers of those children. Libraries also have an advantage in that many of them already offer on-site programs that assist people with resume building and job searching. In partnering with a program that has its own facilities, libraries could potentially bring those services to the community, rather than waiting for members of the community to come to the library.

There are many venues for community outreach in urban areas – as Flynn (2014) suggests in her blog post about partnering with a summer meals program, libraries can get partner with schools to create programs that offer a needed service, such as food, with another service such as education and literacy. With programs such as this, libraries are able to bring a taste of the programs that they offer to people who would otherwise not necessarily know what the library could offer them. From Flynn’s experiences, it seems as though the summer meals program began with attracting more people to the program and then stemmed out to bring those same people into the library once the meal program ended after the summer. In order to increase accessibility for many urban patrons, some libraries have started allowing the addresses of shelters to serve as sufficient information to obtain a library card and bookmobiles and delivery programs have been implemented in order to bring books to those who are unable to travel to the library on their own (Mars, 2013).

Bringing library services to urban populations in an effort to draw them into the actual, physical library can prove to be a difficult endeavor. Librarians must educate themselves on and learn from first hand experience the struggles that people living in urban communities deal with on a daily basis. Learning and application are the basis of any great library outreach program and there it is never too early (or too late!) to begin making a difference.

Community Outreach in Urban Populations: Why?

I currently work in Detroit, near the Wayne State University campus, in Hutzel Hospital. It’s a very different atmosphere compared to what you may find in a library – hectic, loud at times, and fast-paced. Yet, I’ve become increasingly aware of the people that rotate in and out of the doors of the hospital – this urban population is made up of so many different types of people and the hospital finds ways to serve all of them and to reach out to them in ways they can relate to and appreciate. Why not the same for libraries?

Community outreach in urban populations is especially important because there are often groups of people living in those areas with literacy and access issues. In cases such as these, it is important for librarians to get involved with social events in the community and interact with potential patrons in a way that is inviting and relatable. Low literacy levels is a continuing issue in urban areas. As Kong describes, “nearly a quarter of California’s adult population lacks prose literacy skills” (2013). Library outreach in the form of literacy programs have an opportunity to take action and increase literacy levels in urban populations. From my research on this topic, I’ve learned that without harboring a collection that the library’s target population can relate to, there is very little chance that the library will be able to bring in and continue to properly serve that population. In Garcia’s (2014) blog post, Mirrors and Windows, she indicates that building diverse collections is difficult: although nearly half of the U.S. population is comprised of people of color, in 2013, “less than one third of one percent of children’s books published in the United States were about people of color.” With statistics such as these, libraries must delve deep into their collections to highlight literature that can be relatable and they must also work to build their collections to include more titles that can be both universally relatable but also highlight the minorities that are often found in urban populations.

Equity of access is a major issue for urban populations, specifically the poor and homeless population (American Library Association). Some of the major issues that this group faces in terms of library use are: policies that require a permanent address for a library card, fines or fees that give the perception that the use of library services costs money, staff who are not trained to be sensitive to or hold prejudices against the poor and homeless, limited access to the library facility by lack of transportation or unaccommodating hours of service, lack of programs or resources that address people’s current situations, and limited promotion at community centers that serve the poor and homeless (American Library Association). Fortunately, many of these issues can be solved with intensified efforts in community outreach and an increase in staff education.

Outreach Programs and Students: When?

Outreach programs for students can take place during a variety of times throughout the year. Many of the programs mentioned previously took place during the school year, but this doesn’t always have to be the case. Summer loss seems to be a common issue among students, so outreach programs offered during the summer months can prove to be very effective. Many public libraries can help students achieve by “providing summer reading programs, read-a-thons, family read-ins, early literacy promotions, hosting educational events, and sharing resources and information” (Martinez, 2008). Libraries can develop a wide variety of outreach programs during June, July, and August that could be very helpful in ensuring students are continuing to excel with their reading skills. Because students are not in school during these months, multiple programs can be offered to students of all ages. The public library in the city in which I live offers many events throughout the summer. One event that is very popular is a teacher read-aloud program. Teachers from all of the schools in the city are invited to sign-up to read at the library. The students absolutely love this because they get the opportunity to see their past teachers outside of school. This program is held at the library, so it also helps bring families to the library in the summer.

Overall, outreach programs to students are very beneficial in helping students succeed in school. So many different programs are available, both in school and out. Librarians can help support teachers by providing curriculum-based programs, homework help activities, and so much more. The collaboration between public and school librarians is very important in helping today’s students succeed.
